When Shawn asked me to write this blog post I admit that I had some apprehension. I’m not the best at these sorts of things. Though I will say that I am glad she did. In doing some research for this post I gained a renewed faith in the fashion industry and in society as a whole. As I was trying to decide what the topic of this post would be, a friend suggested spring hair trends for 2016 (thank you Juniper). This was a wonderful suggestion; I immediately began researching current hair trends.
The last year or so we have seen a lot of interesting things; two of my favorite are the opal and oil slick multicolor demi permanent looks.
The opal look is a spectrum of pastel colors woven finely into platinum hair to give the appearance of translucent iridescent colors like the opal stone. The oil slick look does just the same but on a dark brown or black base color.
Though these color choices are not for everyone, they certainly push the limits of technical and precision color formulation and application; plus they just look wicked cool!
But these are trends I already knew about. I wanted to know what was up and coming for this spring. What is the future of fashion, what will spring of 2016 contribute to the fashion world? Into the fray once more, the deep dark abyss that is the Google search engine. It wasn’t long before I found Glamour Magazines trend watching articles in the Hair & Beauty section. Boy, am I glad that I found these little gems! My absolute favorite is the section about how to wear hair accessories for the upcoming season. Glamour is not big on words; in fact the whole articles didn’t have much of any useful content. But the pictures spoke volumes. Underneath the article was a series of pictures of models, supposedly displaying the trends that every woman should know.
This first stunning style is what I like to call “Wings of Toilet Paper”. Straight from the Glamour Magazine webpage, it is clear and apparent that the new spring look is bits of paper pined to either side of the head. I really do love this look; it not only shows the Avant Garde and inspirational imagery of goddess like wings but the versatility of toilet paper. We can see simply by the smile on this young models face that this particular style has filled her with self-confidence and reassurance with a professional yet elegant look.
This second look is even more breathtaking than the first. Not only the hair accessory, which is worn in this case around the neck, but the cut and style itself. Nothing says “I cut my own hair” like the hack job that is those bangs. The bold and slightly understated choice to fashion the model’s own hair into a makeshift head scarf is genius! I call this look the Hair Hijab. If we look closely we can see that the accessory that pulls this whole look together is nothing more than a black and yellow zip tie, no doubt purchased at the local hardware store.
In the end, this assignment was most enlightening and educational. There is a calming sense of tranquility in knowing the fashion industry hasn’t become completely absurd.
